Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis
The British Medical association describes hypnosis’s as “A temporary condition of altered attention in the subject which may be induced by another person and in which a variety of phenomena may appear spontaneously or in response to verbal or other stimuli”
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness where the subconscious level of the mind is in a state of hyper-suggestibility.
What does it feel like to be hypnotised
Being in hypnosis is very much a subjective state. Everyone feels it differently.A common theme across all people is a sense of deep relaxation, calmness and a sense of letting go. People come out of hypnosis feeling refreshed and with a positive mind set.
Can everyone be hypnotised
Everyone can be hypnotised BUT only if they want to be. Hypnosis is a consent driven phenomena. If you do not want to be hypnotised you won’t, if you do you will. It’s as simple as that.
Will I lose control
Absolutely NOT. Hypnosis is a collaborative state. You can cough, itch or move during hypnosis and retain full control at all times. Hypnotherapy works with your personal value system. You absolutely cannot be controlled in to doing something against your morals, ethics or values. This is why when you come to hypnotherapy you need to want to make a specific change. If you have no desire to change and don’t want to, Hypnotherapy is highly unlikely to work.
Will it definitely stop the problem
This cannot be promised by any reputable therapist. Similarly, despite every best intention, no doctor, surgeon or psychologist will promise results for every condition in every patient. There is, however, an abundance of clinical and academic research into the efficacy of hypnotherapy
Is Hypnotherapy available on the NHs
The General Medical Council (GMC) guidance to doctors confirms they are able to refer patients to practitioners on accredited registers, including the CNHC. However, your GP is not able to refer you to a hypnotherapist at the cost of the NHS.
Do the NHS and 'NICE' recognise hypnotherapy
The General Medical Council (GMC) guidance to doctors confirms they are able to refer patients to practitioners on accredited registers, including the CNHC. However, your GP is not able to refer you to a hypnotherapist at the cost of the NHS.
When is it not appropriate to use hypnotherapy
As an ethical hypnotherapist I take great care to ensure that my clients are suitable for hypnosis.
Hypnosis is NOT suitable for those with a significant psychiatric diagnosis such as psychosis, severe depression, dementia or diminished/poor mental capacity.
Hypnosis is very effective for pain relief therefore it is extremely important that I work with medical consent. I will ask your doctor to sanction treatment.

A website is all very well and good but it can only go so far especially with regards to hypnotherapy. It’s a complex subject and one which I find fascinating. Each client is different with different needs which is one of the reasons why I haven’t written reams of text around each and every condition. Why? Because you are unique, there are no generic treatment plans at Jess Hypnosis. Call me, if I’m unavailable I will call you back within 24hrs.
